What’s In the Image?

Here’s an explanation for everything that I included in the main graphic used on TDDewey.com.

Flash Timeline

I’ve dabbled with Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash a little bit and I’ve taken some college coursework designing simple flash animations and applications. The most extensive project I did involving flash was a series of navigation tabs that animated using standard Flash animation techniques as well as actionscript.

Blue Color

I like this color blue, it’s pretty.

Triangle Pattern

I should probably think of some profound reason why I used these triangles, but I really can’t think of any.

Olive Color

This is also one of my favorite colors probably due to it’s over-use in Boy Scout designs

Web 2.0 Stripes

I used these stripes as homage to design trends typical of “web 2.0.”

Coffee

After having lived in Oregon, I feel like I am significantly entrenched in the coffee culture. I’ve written several times on this site about my favorite coffee shop.

Swing Dancing

I taught swing dancing to a bunch of friends in High School and was becoming fairly decent.

WWII

You will see a few items with WWII significance throughout the collage — this particular text is used to convey my interest in overall WWII history and the time period.

1st Infantry Division Patch

I belong to a WWII Reenacting unit that portrays soldiers in the 1st Infantry Division. As part of this, I have done a fair amount of reading regarding the history of the Big Red One.

WWII Medical Corps Brassard

In addition to doing a WWII infantryman impression, I have put together and researched a WWII medic impression. This culminated with the manufacture of authentic, reproduction WWII plasma bottles that were sold to reenactors, collectors, and film studios worldwide. The website devoted to this project is currently dormant, but is located at wwiimedic.com.

Amateur (Ham) Radio

I hold technician class: KD7MRT. I’m not currently active on the air, my license was procured to serve a communication need for my Boy Scout Jamboree Troop. I subsequently helped several other people obtain their license.

Hand Cursor

Hyperlinks are the backbone of the World Wide Web and the hand cursor is used to indicate a hyperlink… I think the connection is clear.

Open Book

The open book represents my love of reading (fiction and non-fiction) as well as metaphoric for a love for learning.

Compass Rose

“I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks” — Daniel Boone

Sea Scouting, Boy Scouts of America

I was active in Sea Scout Ship 202, Deja Vu located in Portland, Oregon for a time.

Venturing, Boy Scouts of America

I was active in Venturing for a number of years and I feel like it’s my baby. Venturing is an extremely new program of the Boy Scouts and not many people understand how it’s supposed to work.

Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America

Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Earned September 28, 2000.

Police Line Do Not Cross

I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice and I worked in the Private Security Industry for a number of years.

Fig. 1

I enjoy technical writing, or at least I’m much more at ease writing technical documents than I am writing a novel.

US Caliber .30 M1 Rifle

This represents my WWII infantryman impression. My rifle was manufactured in late 1944 or early 1945 by Springfield Armory.

Portland, Oregon Skyline

I was born and raised in the Portland metro area so I consider it to be my hometown. I can think of no better hometown to have.

DNA

It’s kind of hard to see, but that is the result of a DNA gel electrophoresis. I took significant amounts of Life Science courses in High School — and of all the stuff we learned, the coursework on DNA/genetics was the most interesting.

Model Rocketry

I was into model rocketry with my dad a long time ago — I have fond memories.

Facebook

I’m on Facebook. Please note that I only friend people I know. If you’re looking for networking, I’d love to hook up with you on LinkedIn.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

I taught myself HTML in 1998 as a Freshman in High School. I’ve been designing online since.

WordPress

I found WordPress only about six months ago. I almost instantly fell in love with how easy it became to set-up complex websites. I was able to apply PHP, HTML, and design skills without having to reinvent the wheel. The website you are currently viewing comes to you courtesy of the WordPress platform.

Adobe InDesign

Once you get past the learning curve of InDesign, you feel ready to conqur the world of desktop publishing. The most complicated project I did with InDesign was a complete and accurate reproduction of a WWII field manual but I’ve used it for numerous projects including the design of my resume.

Adobe Photoshop

Without a suitable graphics program the web would be a series of colored boxes at most. Thankfully I’ve learned how to use Photoshop. All the graphics (and most of the photos and illustrations) have gone through Photoshop before landing on this website.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

I use Lightroom to catalog and prepare all of the photographs that I take — It is indispensable for this purpose.

Camera Viewfinder with Photo

Camera gear nuts will notice the split-prism finder which suggests manual focus combined with nine point AF indicators. I’d like to point out that I only wish I had that set-up. I love taking photos and I have been for many years. I first learned how to really take photos on an old Olympus OM-1 (hence the split-prism). I’m currently using a dSLR (hence the 9-point AF). I have a significant portion of the website devoted to my photography.

Bayer Pattern

While I love taking photographs, I absolutely hated the wet darkroom. Going digital has freed me from that and I will never go back.

Pixel Rulers and Image Handles

I popped this in the collage to emphasize that my graphics skills are more set in the pixel-based world of web design.

Bicycle Chainring

I use a bicycle to commute and I enjoy bike riding for pleasure as well. It seems that my entire family is on a bike: my sister and mother both race. My favorite (so far) is tandem road touring, but I haven’t had the opportunity to that in a long time.

Trekking Poles

I put trekking poles into the design to very deliberately symbolize my love of hiking and backpacking.

Console Games

The PlayStation controller symbols represent my enjoyment of console gaming. I’m not fanatic about it, but I do enjoy short periods of gaming.

Board Games

Actually, Monopoly isn’t my favorite board game, but I don’t think many people will instantly recognize Mr. X, Ticket to Ride, or Fluxx (which is technically a card game).

Legos

Ask my parents, Legos consumed my non-academic life during elementary school. I had a plastic kiddie pool that I had dumped all of my legos into. I would scrape through the pool looking for that one, exact part that I needed to complete my latest creation.

Matchbox Cars

I’m sure I had a strong preference between Matchbox and Hotwheels, but I can’t remember. I just remember playing with those small, metal airplanes and cars. My favorites were airplanes and emergency vehicles that had sirens when you pressed the front wheels down.

Paper Airplanes

For a time I was really into paper airplanes (and airplanes in general, I wanted to be a pilot for a long time). I remember attempting to make the high-performance paper gliders called white-wings.

TDDewey Home

Did you want to go back to the front page?
This logo was created during the 1st generation of the website. I remember making various initial brandings even way back in Elementary school where we carved potato stamps. I think this is a far better version.

Topographical (Topo) Map

The topo map shown isn’t of any significant place, but rather depicts my love for the outdoors and our geologic environment. I just don’t think I could live in Kansas.
